The Soundtracks of Our Lives

On a recent field trip to the land of Tumuli, I left this comment:

Music is a companion, one to help you through times of loss, times of sadness and grief. It helps you struggle through confusion and helps you find your way when you are lost. Music adds that special glow when you are happy and adds the explanation mark when you are in love. To quote Dick Clark, "Music is the soundtrack of our lives." It is our soundtracks that make us unique....

mmmm, got me thinking, what would be on my soundtrack-

Subdivisions, Rush- growing up in middle class America- I always considered this my teenage angst song even before I was a teenager- "In the high school halls, In the shopping malls, Conform or be cast out..." I was the kid who constructed and wore trash bag dresses to school because Toto Coelo did it in a video- no one quite got me... I was a mess.

I Love it Loud, KISS- this was my big fuck you song. I was just a wee monkey but "Whiplash, heavy metal accident, Rock on, I wanna be president" totally spoke to me... I knew I could grow up bust some balls and be whatever the fuck I wanted to be.

Twist and Crawl and I Confess, The English Beat- When I was 9 months pregnant with my son, my husband announced he was leaving me for another woman. I think most women would have wanted to crawl into a hole and died, and trust me I did too for about 2 days. I turned to silly music that made me happy and that made me want to dance around in my undies. I played the Best of The English Beat over and over again and well, I got over it....

Clocks, Coldplay- I don't even know what this song is about but it always makes me think about being in love and that fabulous feeling of elation you get when love is new and your whole body tingles with excitement when you hear their voice. This song came out, around the time I allowed myself to take risks again and I fell head over heels in love. I felt like I was constantly running through a meadow, it was some really cheesy shit...

All I Want to Do, Sheryl Crow- I am not a fan, but this song always makes me feel like I am in La Jolla driving along the beach with the top down. We used to drive out to San Diego, leaving Phoenix at midnight so we can could catch the surfers hitting those first waves. We would sit there on the rocks, watching the cute boys, drinking over priced smoothies and soaking in the sunrise.

Cherry Pie, Warrant- I gotta say this song makes for a great song to strip to. I went through a whole phase were I wore my hair in pig tails and would wear little catholic school girl skirts. I played up the whole cherry popper thing, it was a good look for me.

Temptation, Heaven 17- Total fluff song, I like it because it is such a fun dance song. I have to dig out the old cassette once in a while just so I can embarrass myself and dance around my living room.

Born Slippy, Underworld- Trainspotting, I dragged all of my friends to go see it and no one I knew liked it but me. I think I have seen it 17 times, and that is not counting all the peeks while it is on cable. The movie that marked the beginning of my stalking of Johnny Lee Miller. That restraining order will never stop me....

Anyhoo, that is all I can think of right now..... I know there are more...
More later, Shroom Monkey the Metal Years....

Boy, everyone's in a mood to reminisce these days.

Yeah, that Sheryl Crow song was huge when I was in my first miserable marriage, and I'd always sing along, but change the lyrics to "All I wanna do ... is smoke some bongs."

Good times. Good times.

Yeah, I couldn't come up with anything else..... So here is to unoriginality!!!

This actually IS original... I love how you turn comments into full blogs (but because your posts are already deeply perceptive, most could be extended into insightful, doctoral-level analysis anyway).

You have good taste in music! I should steal your idea and write my own soundtrack, but THAT would be unoriginal. You and your dibs on decent blog ideas...

That was a cool post. It would take me forever to do that. Music kept me from committing suicide. I mean that literally.
I remember having a 12" single on vinyl (the big, black round plastic looking things, kids) of "Twist & Crawl". I loved that shit.
Kiss were the first band I ever bought a record of, "Alive". I fell in love. How could you not at 7 yrs old? IMO, anything after "Love Gun" is shit. Remember "I Was Made For Loving You"? The Kiss disco song? Jeesh.

You can add me as another person who loves Trainspotting and Angelina Jolie's first husband. Yum :-p

I thought Trainspotting was an excellent movie. Some people can't handle its harshness...me thinks.

I'm not a fan of Sheryl either. I used to be in university....Come to think of it, "Lie to Me," or whatever it's called, got me through a breakup. Hate that song now. Love Clocks...Anything Coldplay is hott....

Skincarver- don't tell anyone I liked the KISS disco song.. I think our music defines us in some aspects.

Sherry- mmmmm Johnny Lee Miller- Sick Boy, yummmmmmy. Love him something fierce!

Blonde Vigilante- I know everyone hates the dead baby on the ceiling thing but that was my favorite part- it just was such an essential scene...

Haley-O- Coldplay is pretty music for the masses- I can't play a CD through but I like a few songs like crazy..

I loved this post and really think that music saves a lot of people.

From your own excellent comment that sparked the rest of the post to your interesting choices, you're one hell of a monkey. Love KISS, the good beer buzz line, and the English Beat. You rock pretty damned hard Shroom.

RUSH!!!

Fellow Torontonians. They rock. Our high-school video year book was made to a variety of RUSH songs. Gave it instant credability.

Sheryl Crow's best song was, "If it makes you Happy"... That song got me into a lot of trouble - wink - and into a lot of chicks back in the day.

I love it loud is an absolute classic. I actually need it for my Ipod.

And I can actually picture you pole-dancing to Cherry Pie. Tons of hot guys and girls in straw hats stuffing Canadian money into your g-string, those candy eyes, shining like dollar signs and that nose and mouth glistening with sweat.

Waiter!!! Bring me another round!
